What is Auriculotherapy?
Your brain works like a computer controlling many parts of the body. You have 5 basic senses that provide information to the brain from the outside world, as does a keyboard on a computer. If there was a “keyboard” that could access the brain, we would be able to directly affect many conditions through the “brain’s computer” by just knowing how to effectively use the keyboard. This is the neuropsychological theory behind Auriculotherapy (aw-rik-ulo-therapy). The nerves originating from the ear “reflex” points are projected back to the brain. This effect is what gives us a “keyboard” (the human ear) that connects directly to our “brains computer.” The science was first compiled in the late 1950’s in France and Germany. It then made its way to China where leaders in Oriental medicine embraced it. How Does Auriculotherapy Compare to Acupuncture? Auriculotherapy is similar to ear acupuncture except that it doesn’t use needles. A micro-current stimulator is place on reflex points outside the ear. These points then send a message to the brain based on the location of the reflex point being affected. Auriculotherapy is based on the human nervous system, whereas acupuncture is based on “energy meridians.” How Does Auriculotherapy Relieve Pain? Natural pain relieving biochemicals know as endorphins and enkephalins are substances that are made in our bodies to fight pain. They work as well as morphine to stop pain. Auriculotherapy has been shown to raise the levels of these substances in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid. Endorphins and enkephalins also contribute greatly to our sense of well being.
